Bedtime Routines

Updated: Dec 13

Establishing bedtime routines is crucial for children to start relaxing after a long day. It also indicates to children that it's time to get ready for sleep.Every family's bedtime routine may vary, but the key is to ensure that it is consistently followed every night. The significance of this lies in its function of indicating predictability in the routine. For instance, when reading a book is the initial part of the bedtime schedule, your child will naturally start associating a book at night with the approaching bedtime.

How long should bedtime be?

Ideally, the bedtime routine should last 45 minutes from the beginning to lights out. This time frame is important because if it's too lengthy, some children may deliberately extend bedtime to avoid going to sleep. Conversely, if the routine is too brief, children may find it challenging to relax and unwind completely.

What should bedtime include?

Common tasks to include in the bedtime routine are:

  • Bathe (if the child does not yet get a bath every night, a wash down with a wash cloth serves the same purpose regarding bedtime routine)

  • Gentle massage

  • Reading a book/story telling

  • Last milk of the day - ensure the bottle is not being given to feed the child to sleep

It is vital to keep in mind that as you wrap up the bedtime routine, this is the time to switch on the sound machine, turn off the lights, and place your child in bed feeling drowsy but still AWAKE. This routine sets the stage for a peaceful and restful night's sleep for both you and your little one.

Should each parent have their own bedtime routine?

No! The bedtime routine should be consistent, no matter who is carrying it out or where it is taking place. This applies to children who may alternate nights spent at grandparents house or split parent household. While vacation travel may alter the usual bedtime schedule, it is advisable to maintain the bedtime routine as closely as possible.
